Biography

1947

Born in Tokyo
Raised in Horinouchi, Yokosuka-city, Kanagawa until the age of five. Attended elementary and middle school in Koenji Minami, Suginami-ward, Tokyo from age six.
Attended Waseda University Senior High School and enrolled at Waseda University.

1967

Started the event group “Mandoragora.” Experimentally ran a variety of event performances in the street and indoors, such as A funeral procession for Marilyn Monroe, Chrysanthemum, Sacred flag – A solar eclipse, CAN, etc.

1968

First encounter with Hijikata through his solo, Hijikata Tatsumi and Japanese: Rebellion of the Body, Nippon Seinen-kan Hall (Tokyo, Japan)

1969

February: Learned at Tatsumi Hijikata’s Asbestos Studio, Tokyo, for 18 months living at there.
September: Debut Performance as “Black Rose” at Hamamatsu Gold Carriage Music (Shizuoka, Japan)
He appeared in the film Horrors of Malformed Men (directed by Teruo Ishii, Toei) in which Tatsumi Hijikata appears.
As an attendant of Hijikata, he visited Toei’s Kyoto Studio and the Noto Peninsula where the film was shot.

1970

Researched on Shugendo that he had long been interested in as the theme of his university thesis, and practiced “Yamabushi” (practices asceticism) twice, in the spring course and in the autumn course. Attained the first grade. His given name as Yamabushi is Shunkei.

1972

Dropped out of Waseda University.
Participated in the inauguration on Dairakudakan, matrix troupe of Butoh.
